Practice index: carry one project through the book

The chapter artifacts form a working record for one project. You do not need to recreate a document when an existing one already serves the purpose. Link the relevant section, preserve its current version, and add the new evidence where another reader can find it.

The tables below identify the work each chapter adds and what to bring forward. They are a navigation aid for the book’s exercises, not an additional maturity model or a scored assessment. The canonical SSA-CMM labels and the scope of your evidence are examined in Chapter 23.

Mind: establish a question worth pursuing

Chapter Working document Carry forward
1 Capability baseline A bounded task, first candidates, criteria, corrections, and remaining gaps.
2 Claim–evidence ledger Claims with source support, limitations, and unresolved hypotheses.
3 Curiosity map A consequential question connected to an observable next inquiry.
4 Inquiry brief Input, proposed learner performance, practice, and a way to judge it.
5 Concept deconstruction Assumptions, explanatory gaps, and reasons behind a useful correction.
6 Connection map A tested comparison across domains and where the analogy breaks.
7 Learning loop An inspectable failed attempt, repair, current selector, and next question.

Do not tidy these records by deleting the failed candidate. A later reader needs to see what changed and why. Distinguish an actual attempt in your project from the book’s authored practice specimens.

Memory: make useful judgment available again

Chapter Working document Carry forward
8 Memory inventory What exists, where it is, what is missing, and how it is used.
9 Memory charter Purpose, authority, access, retention, and current-state rules.
10 Memory lanes Separate working context, project state, reusable knowledge, and history.
11 Distillation record Evidence for a reviewed rule change and its verified current destination.
12 Knowledge map Typed relationships connecting claims, instructions, attempts, and questions.
13 Verdict ledger A scoped judgment with reason, counterexample, correction, and later use.
14 Operating manual A usable route into the task, including interruption and resumption.
15 Portability drill Evidence about reconstruction, current instructions, and separately tested behavior.

In the Himura Inc. teaching case, the existing selector eventually points to instructions-v3. Earlier v1 and v2 records remain historical. A later explanation of the case should not silently change which instruction an earlier attempt used. The literal current instruction and selector are available in the distillation artifact.

System: demonstrate, deliver, and inspect the economics

Chapter Working document Carry forward
16 Capability demonstration A fresh task, first candidate, review, correction, effort, and bounded next responsibility.
17 Delegation contract Allowed sequence, required inputs, returned objects, repair limit, and escalation.
18 Review policy What a person checks, the source of their judgment, and how a mistaken verdict is repaired.
19 System contracts Matching job, source, candidate, and comparison identities across handoffs.
20 Enterprise runbook Intake, scoped delivery, support, capacity, maintenance, and recovery.
21 Product experiment Buyer question, offer, response, delivery, feedback, and the limits of the result.
22 Unit economics Revenue and cash assumptions, owner effort, fixed costs, capacity, and a changed case.
23 Capability portfolio Claims tied to actual evidence and the next missing demonstration.
24 Solo-enterprise plan A bounded sequence of next decisions under explicit commercial and personal constraints.

Work without coding

Use ordinary documents, folders, and a table. Read the instruction, attempt the task, compare the result with the source, record your judgment, and reopen the saved record. You can rehearse role handoffs sequentially. Label that as manual practice; it does not establish autonomous execution by a system you have not run.

The optional memory checker demonstrates file integrity against a supplied manifest. The economics calculator performs arithmetic on explicit scenario inputs. Neither is required to understand or complete the core exercise. Their guides describe prerequisites, sample inputs, expected outputs, and what a successful run establishes.

Return to a stalled project

Open the latest decision and the evidence it cites. Identify the uncertainty that prevents the next useful action. If the current instruction is missing, repair the route to it. If the output violates a present rule, inspect the attempted application. If the offer has no buying evidence, choose an appropriate commercial inquiry. A different kind of gap calls for a different next action.

Retain a short record of your decision, what you will do, and what result would change it. The value of this collection is that it lets you resume the inquiry without reconstructing your entire history or pretending that every unresolved question has already been answered.
